Each thread of identity weaves itself into other complex cultures, who relate to one another through the practice of religion, language, customs, politics and technology, affecting their environments.</span></div>

Argument-ably, our communities are affected and shaped by local conflicts, which may or may not allow the community to progress. Despite each region’s dilemma of conflict, the exhibition attempts to connect diverse cultures, by inviting artists questioning these conflicts, and geographies, resulting to re-examine history. Hence by mirroring the environments, and cultivating rich storytelling, </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11813" style="color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "optima"; font-style: italic;">In Close Proximity </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11814" style="-webkit-padding-start: 0px; color: #2e2e2e; font-family: "optima";">transforms the local identity and geography, and the impact it has in the world.</span></div>

In the instance of Mohamed Labat’s, </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11827" style="color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "optima"; font-style: italic;">Refugee Camp, 2016, </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11828" style="-webkit-padding-start: 0px; color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "optima";">beautifully color muted photographs, reveal children looking out into a horizon worthy of question and, uncertainty. However, new ideas develop from their existing conditions, and in Labat’s example of the Sahawari people’s spirit of determination, a new generation of trans-identities and/ or trans- communities- of progressive mindset, rise - to will and establish </span><span style="color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "optima";">autonomy, in respect to their land, history and people.</span></div>

Trans-identities/ communities strive to separate themselves from already existing communities, which raises the question if their action-based methods seek validation, or if it’s an unquenchable desire for societal inclusion, underscored by political interest. Is the exile, an act of resistance, geared towards progress and change? </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11845" style="color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "times"; font-style: italic;">Untitled </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11846" style="color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "optima"; font-style: italic;">(don’t be alarmed or afraid blck), 2009, </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1518031563830_11847" style="-webkit-padding-start: 0px; color: #3a3a3a; font-family: "optima";">depicts a stark, authoritative protest post, camouflaged by its own blackness. Although the post, heeds a message to the viewer, it's not a threat. Guerrier’s decision to question his place in society by choice of color, decrees more of guarded stance, than aggressive opposition. </span></div>

Unfortunately, misrepresentations of race, gender and sexual preferences have resulted in increased discrimination. Many individuals are deciding to break free from conventional constructs of invariable sameness. These ruptures challenge preconceptions of identity within mainstream popular culture, disrupting codes and life. At the same they encourage us to reshape and reinvent ourselves with actions of leadership and progressive thought.</span></div>

The figures appear to be unable to restrain emotions and converse intelligently. Their stance and sexual identities commemorate the histories and mythologies, the failed and unstable relationships, that guilt and haunt us all. This stands in contrast to other examples of conflict found in the exhibition. I would argue that the socially acceptable behavior of women, by contrast, has emphasized modesty, submission and the refrain from public emotional outbursts and defiance. However, in the case of the transgender community, commendable behaviors are surfacing showing the need to abolish stereotypical behaviors based on gender bias- associated to exterior judgments. </span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;">The English naturalist, Charles Darwin spoke of survival of the fittest—or in Darwin’s own words “Survival of the form that will leave the most copies of itself in successive generations.” Herbert Spencer, an English philosopher and Darwin’s contemporary stated that “The survival of the fittest, which I have here sought to express in mechanical terms, is that which Mr. Darwin has called ‘natural selection,’ or the preservation of favored races in the struggle for life.” </span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;">Today we see a struggle created by mankind that stems from neglect in caring for our environment, from carelessly forgetting to preserve natural resources and not consistently participating in beneficial trends of recycling trash into resourceful products that would benefit our future. Many artistic communities favor gestures of recycling and exhibit successful prototypes of recycled goods in fashion, house decor and living. </span></div>

<span style="color: #444444;">In the case of Sterling Rook’s Camo 1984, the viewer can celebrate trashy, flamboyant neon mats, stacked haphazardly upon each other. These loosely serve up an architecture worthy of Miami Beach’s candy-colored landscapes. Michael Gray, by contrast, proposes dark, humorous renderings of scenarios with a bleak twist. Nephilim is a monotype print on paper that portrays a car on top a raft strapped on, presumably, with all it needs to drift away into waterworld. </span></div>

Inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s <i id="yiv1443872323m_-5143381878486883257yiv3047803485yui_3_16_0_1_1496705433942_4446" style="-webkit-padding-start: 0px;">Garden of Earthly Delights </i>(1495–1505), the images may be understood to illustrate a battle ground, a disarray of chaotic madness, where leaves take over the horizon and reduce signs of any other life form. The intimate portrayal of war between the foliage turns becomes, for some viewers at least, a protective shield. The environmental context is lost as the viewer is faced with a pattern of incessant wrangle—perhaps reflective of our own internal wars, and how humans, who are also part of this nature, turn on each other.</span></span><br />

Colonies of plants and flowers adapt and learn to coexist through a process. Throughout the action and with time of its growth, plants and flowers die and reawaken with lustrously brighter petals, robustly fuller leaves, taller stems and pretentious beauty. This may be used to disguise their power, which is sometimes deadly. Perhaps the flamboyant colors and shades of greens are meant to seduce the other plants into a suffocating, sensual trap, forcing them to interlock in communal growth that illustrates a divine purpose of coexistence, an idea which seems difficult for humankind to understand at the moment.</span></span><br />

The once chic, tropical island became economically paralyzed in 1959. Practically barricaded from the global world the tightly controlled island learned to adapt to scarce resources and forced to adapt to progressively faltering conditions. Cubans were robbed of experiencing the fast paced advances occurring globally, yet despite these circumstances, there was opportunity for inventions of brilliant resilience. Devices made with mundane household goods. Designed recycled fashions reaching for high end creations. This unique personalized urban landscape of escape within their own homes and world functioned both as a means to keep up with contemporary society and as form of survival.</span></div>

A huge migration of refugees set adrift launching a monumental cultural mark in Miami. With the already lavish landscape of palm trees and beaches, the coast symbolized a contradictory freedom thanks to its simultaneous drug cartel scenarios and thriving disco inspired nightlife. Whatever impact it historically made- it was wondrous and created a bridge between South Florida and Cuba.</span></div>

These changes are as grave as rising sea levels; the debate of how capitalism may affect Cuba’s assets such its natural, uncontaminated land due to lack of pollution from industrialized companies; Miami's fickle real estate economy responsible for causing mass-gentrification to lower income neighborhoods; politics limiting both groups’ voices in relationship to decision making such as governor Rick Scott authorizing a deadly spray during the Zika scare without Dade County neighborhoods consent; and the young contemporaries in Cuba questioning why exchange programs are their only permit to travel freely. These are but just a few examples. </span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">After many decades of frosty relations between the U.S. and Cuba, the recent positive developments have brought a feeling of excitement and hope to the Cuban people of both South Florida and Cuba. The exhibition observes the relationship of the artist to their environment- changing landscapes and ability to adapt-retreat, refuge and escape. The show which will run through Sunday, December 5</span><span style="font-size: 8px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: normal;"><sup>th</sup></span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> and is curated by Belaxis Buil whose work has been exhibited in “Intersectionality” and “Taz” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, Art Shanghai, China, Tacheles Museum, Germany and Art Basel Miami.</span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">On Saturday, December 3rd, AFP will host a night of fashion, performance art, dance theater and music overlooking Miami Beach. A site~specific fashion show featuring Belaxis Buil designs (contemporary Cuban inspired, ready to wear) will highlight the evening, but <i>Cosa Rica</i> will also feature provocative performance art, video and sound installations from Willie Avedano and dance theater performance by Hellektrick Danse Theatre. The music for the evening will be curated by NYC based DJ/Producer Gatto. This special night is a celebration of identity- revival and reinvention of the Cuban- Cuban American identity. The event is 8pm-12am, rooftop at 1052 Ocean Drive Miami Beach.</span></div>

Just because you say<br />

Our lives are defined by constructs. Without this, we can argue to say chaos can shatter our truest potential, because we need structure, practice, or to devoutly believe in something. But what happens when we master our own conditions and face the challenge of questioning beyond what we know?<br />
<br />
There is a determination innately designed in the human psyche to manifest achievements. We are taking risks to progress in manifesting the divine impossible, programming robotics to take over human task, with less flaw, creating digital landscapes, and minimizing gender expectations based on work ethic or power play.<br />
<br />
In this explorative, curatorial project, I found an organic and curious conversation between the artists works. The works were quiet defiances of the established.The result is a poetic collage of neutral color palettes, movement, and images.<br />

Assemblage of persons, ideas, aesthetics, personalities and opinions is an art in itself.<br />

As curator, this is certainly the reality set in the horizon, with all future projects. The final result- will prove to be successful, when all the works come together and relate the intended message.<br />
<br />
On October 14th, 2016, a selected group of artists will be displaying works at the Bakehouse Gallery.<br />
<br />
Thanks to Jacek Kolinski, The Bakehouse and FIU and the participating students, " Just because You say' will be open for a 2 week viewing session.<br />
